What is a Socratic Dialogue (pdf-file)
Article published on www.stichtingderaet.be
The Socratic Dialogue is based on the methods of Socrates, the famous philosopher and teacher who is known through Plato's dialogues. Socrates maintained he knew nothing himself but simply questioned the propositions put forward by his conversation partners when they put forward arguments about, for instance, the meaning of concepts such as justice. The Socratic ideal is that by asking questions in the right way people can reach the essence of truth and values.
A Socratic Dialogue is about going further into a shared research question on the basis of an example which has been introduced by one of the participants. The Socratic Dialogue chairperson monitors procedures and the progress of the research process strictly, but does not become involved in the conversation.
