Handout Plan for Spiral Reflection (pdf-file)
The idea in Spiral Reflection is to reflect in depth on a past action which will be carried out again in the future and which one would like to do differently or more consciously next time round.
You take distance from a situation, analyse connections and look at it with fresh eyes. In Spiral Reflection you propose alternatives and make a choice among these, after which you try this out and report back on what you have chosen to do.
The contributor explains the situation without being interrupted.
Similar situations will happen again in the future.
The facilitator does not interpret the actions of the reflector, their role is to listen, ask questions and encourage.
As facilitator of a reflection session you make the following preparations.
You practise with Spiral Reflection yourself.
You practise trying out alternatives in a situation you have chosen yourself.
You choose a suitable moment in the course.
You prepare the necessary teaching aids: flip charts, markers, sufficient space.
During the reflection session you ensure the following
Make sure that the plan and the rules of the game are followed.
Monitor the time.
A follow-up appointment with the reflector and a session for reporting back.
If you work with sub-groups
You walk around the groups and give further explanation where necessary.
